Leaving School? How a Green CSCS Card Can Help You Get into Construction

Leaving school is an exciting milestone, but working out what comes next can feel overwhelming. You might already have a career in mind, or you may still be exploring your options but it is important to note that University and college are not the only routes available.

For anyone who enjoys practical work, learning on the job and being part of a team - construction can offer an appealing place to begin. One possible first step is gaining a Green CSCS Laborer Card, which is intended for people carrying out laboring duties on construction sites.

Here at ACT we think it's important to consider all options so we have written this guide to explain what the card is, the type of work it may help you access and what you normally need before applying.

What Is a Green CSCS Card?

The Green CSCS Card (officially known as the Laborer Card) is designed for people working in laboring roles on construction sites. It is the document that shows employers and site managers that the cardholder has completed an accepted health and safety qualification and passed the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

It is important to note that holding the card does not make you a qualified tradesperson. It is specifically for laboring duties and should not be used for skilled work that requires a different qualification or card.

What Work Could You Do with a Green CSCS Card?

With a Green CSCS Card, you can apply for entry-level laboring roles on construction sites across Scotland, including areas such as Fort William, Inverness and the Highlands. The work can vary depending on the employer and project, but laborers often help prepare work areas by moving materials, keeping the site tidy and providing general assistance.

It can be physically demanding work and often takes place outdoors, so you will need to follow instructions carefully and stay aware of machinery, hazards and other workers on site. For many school leavers, laboring is a practical way to gain experience and start building a career in the industry. ACT can help you take that first step with the health and safety training needed to apply for your Green CSCS Card.

Where Could a Career in Construction Lead?

You do not need to plan your entire career before leaving school! The idea of future employment can be daunting but getting going is the first step. Starting in a laboring role can give you the chance to observe different trades, speak to experienced workers and discover which areas interest you most.

With additional training, qualifications or an apprenticeship, you may eventually choose to work in areas such as:

  • Bricklaying

  • Groundworks

  • Plant operation

  • Plumbing

  • Electrical installation

  • Civil engineering

  • Site supervision or management

Each occupation has its own training and competency requirements (which we can also help with here at ACT). Skilled roles usually require recognised qualifications and the appropriate CSCS card or partner-scheme card.

The Green Labourer Card is therefore best viewed as an entry point for suitable laboring work—not as a substitute for trade-specific training.

Is a Career in Construction Right for You?

Laboring can help you develop more than practical skills. It may also improve your confidence, communication, timekeeping and understanding of workplace responsibilities.

After getting your A Level results, you may be thinking carefully about what comes next. University is not the only route, and if you prefer active, practical work to spending every day at a desk, construction could be worth considering.

A career in construction may suit you if you enjoy working as part of a team, like seeing visible progress at the end of the day and are willing to learn from experienced workers. It is also important to be dependable, arrive on time, follow instructions carefully and take health and safety seriously.

How Do You Get a Green CSCS Laborer Card?

ACT does not issue the Green CSCS Labourer Card directly. However, we can help you complete one of the main steps needed to apply. Our CITB Health and Safety Awareness course is accepted by CSCS as part of the Green Labourer Card application route. Once you have completed the course, you will also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Operatives before applying through CSCS.

Requirements can change, so applicants should always check the latest official CSCS guidance before booking training or applying.

What Does our CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course Cover?

The course covers the basics of site safety, including accident prevention, health and safety law, individual responsibilities, risk assessments and method statements. You will also learn about common construction hazards such as working at height, manual handling, fire prevention, work equipment and occupational health.

Just as importantly, the course helps you understand how to follow site procedures, ask for advice when needed and report unsafe acts before they lead to an accident.

For school leavers and new entrants across Scotland, including Fort William, Inverness and the Highlands, this training can be a practical first step towards working safely and confidently on site. ACT delivers CITB Health and Safety Awareness training from our Dingwall training centre and at customer locations across Scotland.
