CITB Site Safety Plus - A Summary

CITB is the Construction Industry Training Board for the construction sector in England, Scotland, and Wales. CITB supports skills development, including Site Safety Plus (SSP) courses. These are a range of courses for health and safety and career development to help maintain a safe workforce. Included are Health and Safety Awareness Courses (for CSCS Labourer Card), SMSTS, SSSTS, and more.

CITB Site Safety Plus Courses

Health & Safety Awareness (HSA)

  • This 1-day course is an accepted qualification by CSCS when applying for the Green CSCS card. After completing the HSA course, you will understand potential hazards when working on site and be able to give practical advice on keeping yourself and your colleagues safe. The course covers your individual and your employer’s responsibilities, including what you can do if you think anyone’s health and safety is being put at risk.

Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS)

  • This 2-day course is for those considering, or already have, supervisory responsibilities. The course covers all relevant legislation affecting safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. You will understand the importance of risk assesment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture within the workplace.

  • After completing the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS), you will hold a certificate which lasts for five years. After this, you will need to complete a 1-day SSSTS Refresher course to keep your certificate.

Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)

  • This 5-day course is for those considering, or already have, responsibilities for organising, monitoring, controlling and administering groups of staff. e.g site manager. The course covers all relevant legislation affecting safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture within the workforce.

  • After completing the Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS), you will hold a certificate which lasts for five years. After this, you will need to complete a 2-day SMSTS Refresher course to keep your certificate.

Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC)

  • This 2-day Temporary Works Coordinator Training Course (TWCTC) is designed to help those who have responsibility for managing all forms of temporary works on site. The course is considered an essential element of TWC competence, and seeks to improve the knowledge of this role and the temporary works environment. This is not a temporary works technical awareness course, although there are some elements of technical awareness that are signposted throughout that must be included in the course exercises.
