What is PAT, and why does it matter?

The Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) states that any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury must be maintained in a safe condition. Most electrical safety faults can be found by visual examination, but some types of faults can only be found by testing. (HSE)

PAT stands for Portable Appliance Testing and describes the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use.
