Ready for site management? Book our SMSTS Course

At ACT - Avery Cameron Training, we run regular SMSTS and SMSTS-Refresher training courses at our Dingwall Training Centre. But how long is the course? And what, exactly, do you learn on it?

SMSTS Course | Inverness & Fort William

Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)

Who is it for?

  • Our CITB SMSTS course is for those looking at, or already have, responsibilities planning, organising, monitoring, and administering groups of staff, e.g, site manager.

  • For those who already hold a valid SMSTS certificate and need to renew, you can attend a two-day SMSTS Refresher course.

How long is an SMSTS course?

  • An SMSTS course is a five-day course that is often run consecutively; however, sometimes the days are split to allow trainees to work for half the week. For example, you may attend two days of training in week one and three days of training in week two.

What do you gain from an SMSTS course?

  • After completing an SMSTS course, you gain an SMSTS certificate, which is valid for five years. You can renew this certificate by taking an SMSTS Refresher course, which is run over two days instead of five.

  • You will have knowledge about the relevant legislation affecting safe working in the building, construction, and civil engineering. You’ll understand the need for risk assessments in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture within the workforce.

The Awarding Body for SMSTS is CITB Site Safety Plus, but what does this mean for you?

  • CITB stands for the Construction Industry Training Board, and is the awarding body for the Site Safety Plus Scheme (Sometimes referred to as SSP).

  • At ACT - Avery Cameron Training, we are a CITB Approved Training Organisation. An ATO (Approved Training Organisation) undergoes a rigorous approval process to ensure its training programs align with industry needs and regulatory requirements. By booking a CITB training course with us, such as SMSTS, you know that you’ll receive high-quality construction training that meets specific industry standards.

  • As a CITB ATO, we can apply for the CITB Grant Payment of £240 per person if you’re a CITB Levy payer.

What content does the SMSTS course cover?

  • The Health & Safety at Work Act

  • Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations

  • Risk Assessments/method statements

  • Recent changes in accepted working practices

  • Behavioural safety

  • Management of occupational health

  • Electricity

  • Excavations

  • Working at Height

  • Scaffolding

  • Demolition
