Do You Need IPAF Training for a Scissor Lift?

What is a Scissor Lift?

A scissor lift is a type of MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) that lifts workers vertically to carry out work at height. Under IPAF categories, a scissor lift would fall under IPAF 3a - mobile vertical.

Is IPAF a legal requirement?

While not a legal requirement, many employers set IPAF certification as a minimum standard for MEWP operators. This is reflected in hiring policies, so without a PAL card, you may face challenges in hiring MEWPs from rental companies.

What does the IPAF 3a course cover?

  • Regulations and guidance

  • MEWPs categories

  • Structural parts

  • Familiarisation and pre-use inspection

  • Safe operating methods and hazards

  • Practical training on Mobile Vertical

  • Introduction to the machine

  • Storage, charging and fuelling of the machine

Once completed, your IPAF 3a certificate lasts for five years.
